There are four major types of fuel for generators, they are  diesel, propane, gas  and natural gas. Diesel and LP (liquid propane) are the most common. Many of them have air-quality control districts, besides emission requirements they often have restrictions as to how many hours the generator can be run per year. the average is around 200 hours. The fire department should be contracted because they will need to issue the fuel permits required to install the needed fuel tanks in some areas.  Standby generators do create some noise so where you place the generators is another consideration.
