Before making a decision on a diesel generator set you will need to know the different between each of these rating . A standby or emergency generator is designate to be used less than 500 hours per year and for short periods of times when you have power outages The prime rating is given to gensets that can operate over 500 hours per year. These generators can be used 24-hours per day and 7 days a week. Before buying a diesel generator set you need to properly assess the application where the generator is going to be used. It would be foolish to buy a standby and use it for prime or continuous application. Also it normally will void your warranty and wear out your generator. Your generator will last for years if properly sized and designed for it application. You will find many small portables that have both ratings but this does not mean they are designed for continuous use. A prime power generator must be 1800 RPM and liquid cooled.
